Challenge

Joe Gibbs Racing's mechanics and engineers are constantly tweaking and fine-tuning the teams' cars – all in an effort to shave another nanosecond off their times on race day. "We don't spend money on anything unless it helps us go faster," Joe Gibbs is fond of saying.

The teams make thousands of adjustments to their cars' engines, shocks, tires and aerodynamics. They also measure everything about the cars' setups and record all track conditions, collecting hundreds of megabytes of data per day in the process. This information is stored in massive databases at JGR headquarters and used to feed proprietary software simulations that help JGR make smarter race-day decisions.

Here's where it got complicated. During the season, JGR teams travel to a different track almost every week, so having easy access to this performance-boosting data proved to be a difficult proposition.

JGR leased a satellite network, but it proved to be too slow and unreliable. Crew members had to resort to landline-based, dial-up connections and their lengthy download times, which meant they could have only a portion of the data they needed with them in the field.
